St. Thomas has all the tropical flair of an international Caribbean destination, yet all the benefits of being a U.S. territory. The currency is the U.S. dollar, and the island infrastructure follows U.S. health and safety standards.
St. Thomas, the second largest territory in the U.S. Virgin Islands, is located in one of the most picturesque geographical areas in the world. It spans 32 square miles (13 miles long and three wide). It is the seat of the local government and the most cosmopolitan of the three major islands. There are as many as 50 other small islands that make up the cluster of U.S. and British Virgin Islands. Most of these are small and predominantly uninhabited.
St. Thomas is located 1,500 miles southeast of New York and 1,000 miles from South Florida. It is part of the Lesser Antilles Island Chain, which divides the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. St. Thomas lies 18 degrees north latitude and 65 degrees west longitude. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south.
